We Have Strawberries and Asparagus!

The soil has arrived. Thank you to Sharon Barnes for helping with the delivery and development of the right kind of soil for our garden boxes. Due to the rain, we did not do much with the gardens this week. However, it looks like we have strawberries and asparagus!
We plan on harvesting and bagging some herbs (thyme, oregano and chives).
One of the pictures is of a dead furrow - we might retain this furrow throughout the summer to help with the drainage of the garden this year!
Hopefully the rain will stay away this coming week!

First Food Donation of the Season

The garden has been plowed thanks to Tom Meacham.
Recent herbs are: cilantro, oregano and chives. Thanks to Donna Allen for harvesting thyme, cilantro and chives for the herb board. We had our first food donation of the season, herbs, to Fish and Loaves. To date we have harvested 100 bags of herbs. At an estimate of 50 cents per bag, we have earned $50 so far this year.
Monday we hope to get a delivery from Barnes for the soil and Steve Arp is going to fill the boxes with the loader. The TLC class will hopefully transfer the soil from the outside boxes to the center 4 boxes.
We have a full schedule for gardening planned the 15th!

Garden is Making Progress
April 20, 2017
Another week has flown by and we are making great progress in the garden for this year. The garden is in full swing with every spot being planted. Soil will be delivered shortly and our first "big plant" is scheduled with the help of Bellevue High School's Teen Leadership class.
The City of Bellevue will be delivering mulch soon. A big thank you to Kevin Strecker and Mike Lantz. The Bellevue Schools third graders are planting green beans for our garden this year. Our garden would be a lot harder to manage without these organizations and we are very thankful for the help. We would also like to thank Perry's Plantation, who supplies excellent plants which produce bumper crops like eggplant and sweet potatoes; staff members, Steve Arp, Chris Norris and Mandi Artino; and our true gardeners Cat Valero, Donna Allen, Bob Beck and Huron County Master Gardeners, who hoe, weed, and put down fertilizer.
We have asparagus up and a small harvest is planned for next Tuesday. Chives will be harvested and bagged that day too. The strawberries are blooming as well.
We are looking forward to working with everyone in the garden and the upcoming harvests. Bellevue Fish and Loaves and Clyde Food Bank benefit from our great work. We are able to provide fresh, delicious and locally grown produce to enhance the lives of our community.

2017 Growing Season is Here!

The 2017 growing season is here. This year marks our first asparagus harvest. Some of the herbs (chives, garlic and oregano) are already up along with one stalk of asparagus! Hopefully there will be more to join them soon. Our new crop in the garden is okra. We are expecting a good production of it this year. With this years plan, we are hoping to dodge some challenges with the weather.
We are off to a great start of the growing season and are excited to be back working in the garden this year!
